Shruti Gopal

Shruti Gopal is an Indian classical dancer specializing in Bharatanatyam and currently serves as the Artistic Director of the Upadhye School of Dance with her husband Parshwanath Upadhye. Her journey in dance began at an early age, fueled by a passion for the rich cultural heritage of India and the expressive movements that Bharatanatyam offers. Her formal training began under the Natyarani Shantala awardee Smt. Padmini Ramachandran, and she continues to refine her practice under the guidance of Shri Mavin Khoo. The rigorous training she underwent not only honed her technical skills but also deepened her understanding of the art form's nuances and traditions. 

Over the years, her dedication to Bharatanatyam has earned her recognition as a graded artiste of Doordarshan, marking her a notable figure in the field. Shruti has performed extensively at prominent festivals as part of her guru’s ensemble, Natyapriya. In 2011, she represented India in a Cultural Exchange Programme to China organized by the Ministry of Human Resources, Government of India, marking an important international engagement in her career. Her performances have graced prestigious stages both in India and around the globe. Shruti has participated in numerous major dance festivals, showcasing her artistry and the beauty of Bharatanatyam to diverse audiences. Her collaborations with other artists and cultural representatives have further enriched her performances, blending different artistic expressions while staying true to the classical roots of her dance. Throughout her career, Shruti has been celebrated for her innovative choreography and ability to convey profound emotions through dance. Her performances are not only a reflection of her technical prowess but also an embodiment of the stories and traditions that Bharatanatyam represents. 

She was awarded the title Aarsha Kala Choodamani by Swami Dayananda Saraswati in New Jersey in 2012. Alongside her independent work, Shruti has been closely associated with the Punyah Dance Company and has collaborated with established choreographers and institutions, including Shri Vaibhav Arekar’s Sankhya Dance Company for the production, And She Spoke. As she continues to inspire and educate through her work at the Upadhye School of Dance, Shruti Gopal remains a significant contributor to the preservation and evolution of this classical art form.
