Biography

Shravan Samsi is an Indian tabla artist and percussionist based in Mumbai, recognized for his distinctive approach that brings together the rhythmic depth of Indian classical percussion with elements drawn from Western rhythm traditions. His musical outlook reflects a balance between traditional training and contemporary rhythmic exploration.

He received his foundational training under noted tabla maestro Pandit Yogesh Samsi, while also studying and collaborating with internationally acclaimed percussionists Ranjit Barot and Trilok Gurtu. Through this diverse mentorship, Shravan has developed a performance style that integrates classical repertoire with broader rhythmic aesthetics, allowing him to work across multiple musical formats.

Over the years, Shravan Samsi has shared the stage with prominent musicians from both Indian classical and contemporary music circles, including Anantasubramani Hariharan, Trilok Gurtu, Ranjit Barot, Sanjay Divecha, Purbayan Chatterjee, Ustad Fazal Qureshi, Louis Banks, Viveick Rajagopalan, Pandit Ravindra Chary and Pandit Yogesh Samsi.

His performances have taken place at several important music venues and festivals in India and internationally. These include the Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham, the ACC World Music Festival in South Korea, International Drum Festivals, International Jazz Day events, and the Mahindra Blues Festival, as well as major cultural institutions in Mumbai such as the NCPA and NMACC.

Through his performances, collaborations, and productions, Shravan Samsi continues to engage with a wide range of rhythmic traditions while contributing to contemporary conversations around percussion in both classical and global music contexts.
