Biography
Dr. Shovana Narayan is one of India’s most eminent Kathak dancers of the Lucknow gharana, internationally acclaimed for her intellectual depth, technical virtuosity, and profound abhinaya. A senior disciple of Pandit Birju Maharaj and Smt. Kundanlal Gangani, she represents a rare synthesis of traditional lineage and contemporary scholarly engagement.
Trained also as a civil servant, Dr. Narayan brings a distinctive analytical approach to Kathak, enriching the form through innovative thematic presentations while remaining firmly rooted in classical grammar. Her repertoire spans pure dance (nritta), expressive storytelling (abhinaya), and choreographic works drawn from Indian philosophy, poetry, and social themes.
A recipient of numerous national and international honours, including the Padma Shri, Dr. Shovana Narayan has performed extensively across India and abroad. As a respected guru, author, and cultural ambassador, she has made enduring contributions to the documentation, pedagogy, and global dissemination of Kathak.
