Shobana is a Bharatanatyam dancer and acclaimed Indian actress, known for global performances, award-winning cinema, and founding Kalarpana to promote classical dance.

Biography

Shobana Chandrakumar Pillai is an Indian Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, and film actress with a career spanning over four decades. Trained under Chitra Visweswaran and Padma Subrahmanyam, she developed a strong foundation in classical dance while simultaneously establishing herself as a leading figure in Indian cinema across multiple languages. 

As a dancer, Shobana has performed extensively on international stages, presenting Bharatanatyam through both traditional repertoire and choreographed productions. In 1994, she founded Kalarpana in Chennai, an institution dedicated to the training and promotion of classical dance. Her work emphasizes technique, abhinaya, and the continuity of classical forms within contemporary performance contexts.

Alongside her dance career, she has appeared in over 200 films and received two National Film Awards for Best Actress, notably for Manichitrathazhu and Mitr, My Friend. Honored with the Padma Shri (2006) and Padma Bhushan (2025), Shobana’s contributions span performance, pedagogy, and cultural preservation within Indian classical arts.
