Shankar Singh Raghuvanshi

Shankar Singh Ram Singh Raghuvanshi (1922–1987) was a prominent Indian composer whose work significantly shaped the musical identity of Hindi cinema. Born in Hyderabad, he was introduced to music early and trained formally as a tabla player under Baba Nasir Khansahib. He later became a disciple of the noted composer Khwaja Khurshid Anwar, performing in his orchestra and gaining valuable exposure to composition and orchestration.

Shankar began his professional career in theater, first with a touring group and later at Prithvi Theatre, where he played the tabla and acted in small roles. During this period, he also mastered instruments such as the sitar, accordion, and piano. His time at Prithvi Theatre proved decisive, as it led to his partnership with Jaikishan and his association with Raj Kapoor.

As part of the Shankar–Jaikishan duo, Shankar co-created some of the most memorable soundtracks in Hindi film history, noted for their melodic strength, raga-based compositions, and innovative orchestration. After Jaikishan’s death in 1971, Shankar continued composing independently while retaining the duo’s name. He remained active until the mid-1980s and passed away on 26 April 1987 in Mumbai. His contribution is widely regarded as foundational to the golden age of Hindi film music.
