Biography

Sangeet Mishra belongs to an unbroken lineage of sarangi players from Varanasi, a city where music and spirituality flow together. As an eighth-generation musician, he carries a heritage that spans centuries. His first lessons began at home under the guidance of his father, Pandit Santosh Mishra, one of the most respected sarangi masters of the Benaras tradition. He also received advanced training from both his grandfathers, Maestro Bhagwan Das Mishra and Maestro Narayan Das Mishra, absorbing the depth, discipline, and soul of the gharana.

The sarangi is among the most demanding instruments of Indian classical music, with nearly fifty strings and a tone that closely resembles the human voice. Its name, meaning “hundred colors,” reflects its ability to express a wide range of emotions. Sangeet Mishra has mastered this complex instrument with sensitivity and control, allowing each note to breathe and speak with feeling.

He has performed on numerous platforms in India and overseas, sharing the sound of the Benaras tradition with audiences across cultures. His concerts reflect the ancient spiritual voice of India while remaining open, accessible, and alive. Through his performances, Sangeet Mishra continues to preserve a rare art form and ensure that the sarangi’s voice remains strong for future generations.
