About
Biography
Samanwaya Sarkar is regarded as one of the leading sitarists of his generation, known for technical precision and a refined melodic approach that connects traditional forms with contemporary concert aesthetics. Rooted in the Senia lineage through his early training, he later absorbed musical influences from the Bishnupur, Senia Maihar, and Agra-Atrauli gharanas, enabling him to develop a versatile performance style. His strand of gayaki ang is strongly shaped by his long tutelage under Girija Devi, who praised his ability to render tappa on the sitar with authentic technique—a rare achievement among instrumentalists.
His performances feature expressive meend, intricate gamaks, and rapid taans that move from deep lower registers to crisp upper notes with clarity. Sarkar has presented lecture demonstrations for major cultural institutions, including the National Centre for Performing Arts (Mumbai), and academic audiences in Australia and Portugal.
On the world stage, he has represented Indian classical music at festivals such as Sharq Taronalari in Uzbekistan, Mananan International Festival in the British Isles, and Blue Mountains Music Festival in Australia. He has toured extensively across the United States, Canada, and Europe, engaging diverse audiences through both solo sitar recitals and vocal-instrumental duets with Debapriya Adhikary.
Sarkar is also active in artistic production and cultural development. He co-directed Girija: A Lifetime in Music, awarded Best Documentary on Art and Culture at the National Film Awards in India, and works as a trustee of SUR, a non-profit dedicated to Indian music initiatives. His work reflects a commitment to tradition while expanding how the sitar communicates in contemporary performance settings.
