Biography

Sripathi Panditaradhyula Balasubrahmanyam (4 June 1946 – 25 September 2020), widely known as SPB or Balu, was a legendary Indian playback singer, musician, actor, composer, dubbing artist, and producer, whose extraordinary vocal talent won hearts across India and beyond. Born into a Telugu Brahmin family in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, he began his musical journey while pursuing engineering, gradually shifting his focus to singing through persistent practice and early success in competitions.

SPB made his formal playback singing debut in 1966 with the Telugu film Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna and soon became a dominant voice in cinema music. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he recorded tens of thousands of songs in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi and several other languages, earning recognition as one of the most prolific singers in the world. He collaborated with legendary composers and delivered iconic tracks that shaped the sound of Indian film music from the 1970s through the 2000s.

His work with composers like Ilaiyaraaja, R. D. Burman, and later A. R. Rahman, produced timeless songs across styles — from classical and folk inflected melodies to romantic duets and energetic chartbusters. In Hindi cinema, SPB became especially known as the singing voice of stars like Salman Khan in films such as Recognised with multiple honors, SP Balasubrahmanyam won six National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer, numerous state awards, and Filmfare Awards South. The Government of India bestowed upon him the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and posthumously the Padma Vibhushan for his extraordinary contribution to Indian arts.
