Biography

Roopak Kallurkar’s artistry is deeply rooted in tradition, discipline, and a broad rhythmic vision shaped by both Hindustani and Carnatic music systems. He began his training at the remarkably young age of three under the expert tutelage of his father, Pandit Rajagopal Kallurkar, absorbing the fundamentals of tabla through an intensive guru–shishya parampara. Growing up in a musically enriched environment, he was equally influenced by his mother, Smt. Vijayalaxmi Kallurkar, whose grounding in Hindustani vocal music played an important role in shaping his sense of melody, phrasing, and accompaniment.

To further deepen his rhythmic understanding, Roopak trained under renowned Carnatic percussionist Vidwan Kulloor Jayachandra Rao, where he mastered complex Carnatic rhythmic structures and mathematical patterns. This dual training has become a defining feature of his musicianship, allowing him to seamlessly integrate Hindustani clarity with Carnatic precision in his performances.

As an accompanist, Roopak has shared the stage with several eminent Hindustani classical musicians as well as leading artists of the younger generation. His accompaniment is appreciated for its balance, sensitivity, and strong rhythmic dialogue with the main artist. Alongside accompaniment, he is also widely recognized for his commanding solo tabla performances, which have been presented at major festivals and cultural platforms across India. His solos reflect both traditional depth and contemporary vitality, marked by clear articulation, rhythmic imagination, and dynamic presentation.

Roopak’s versatility extends beyond the classical concert stage. He has collaborated extensively with Carnatic musicians, Kathak dancers, and fusion ensembles, both Indian and international. His work with Kathak is particularly notable, where his refined layakari and rhythmic responsiveness enhance the dance’s intricate footwork and narrative expression. In fusion and cross-cultural projects, he brings structural integrity while remaining open to creative exploration.

Equally committed to pedagogy, Roopak plays an active role in teaching students from India and abroad through the Kallur Mahalaxmi Tabla Vidyalaya, an institution founded by his father. Through performance and teaching, Roopak Kallurkar continues to uphold his family’s legacy while contributing a distinctive and evolving voice to the contemporary tabla landscape.
