Ravindra Yavagal

Pandit Ravindra Yavagal (born 1959) is a distinguished tabla exponent whose artistry bridges generations of Indian classical musicians. Raised in a musical family in Karnataka, he was introduced to the tabla by his father and continued his training under respected mentors in Hubli. His exceptional talent was recognized early when he performed at the Sawai Gandharva Music Festival as a child prodigy. This early exposure opened doors to collaborations with leading artists throughout his career.

He has shared the stage with towering figures of Hindustani music, including Bhimsen Joshi, Gangubai Hangal, Ajoy Chakrabarty, Parveen Sultana, and Rajan-Sajan Mishra, as well as Carnatic legends such as M. Balamuralikrishna and Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman. His performances are admired for tonal clarity, rhythmic precision, and a balanced approach that highlights both accompaniment and solo artistry. As a Grade-One artist of All India Radio, he has contributed significantly to national broadcasts and concert programming.

Beyond performance, Pandit Yavagal is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of musicians. He runs a music school in Bengaluru, where many students have progressed into professional roles. He also leads the Sri Rama Kala Vedike Trust, founded in memory of his father, which supports emerging musicians and organizes concerts, including the annual “Naada Namana” festival.

Recognized for his service to the arts, he has received prestigious honors such as the Rajyotsava Award, the Karnataka Kalashri, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. Today, Pandit Ravindra Yavagal continues to strengthen the cultural fabric of Indian classical music through his inspiring performances, teaching, and community initiatives.
