Ravindra Sathe

Ravindra Sathe is a well-known Indian playback singer, primarily associated with the Marathi film industry and theatre. Born on 7 February 1951 in Pune, Maharashtra, he grew up in a culturally rich environment that nurtured his interest in music from a young age. His father was a radio announcer and harmonium player, which played a significant role in shaping his early musical exposure. As a child, Sathe showed remarkable talent and could accurately sing songs of legendary composer Sudhir Phadke. 

Sathe completed his education in Pune and graduated from Fergusson College. Later, he joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), where he studied sound recording and engineering. His professional journey began as a sound recordist at Doordarshan. However, his passion for singing soon led him to pursue a full-time career in music. He also performed on All India Radio and won recognition in competitions such as Sugam Sangeet, which helped establish his reputation as a promising singer. 

He received formal training in classical music under Pandit Nagesh Khadilkar, which strengthened his foundation in Hindustani classical traditions. This training later influenced his versatility in singing devotional songs, light music, and film songs. Sathe’s entry into playback singing came with the Marathi film Samna (1974), where he sang the famous song “Kunachya Khandyavar Kunache Ozhe.” This song became highly popular and marked the beginning of his successful playback career. 

Over the years, Ravindra Sathe has sung for numerous Marathi films and worked with prominent music directors such as Hridaynath Mangeshkar, C. Ramchandra, and Datta Davjekar. His repertoire includes a wide range of musical forms, including natyasangeet (musical theatre), bhajans, and light classical compositions. He has also been associated with the famous Marathi theatre production Ghashiram Kotwal, where he was part of the original cast and crew. 

Apart from Marathi, Sathe has sung in multiple languages such as Hindi, Gujarati, Odia, Assamese, and Haryanvi, showcasing his adaptability and broad appeal. Some of his well-known songs include “Amhi Thakar Thakar,” “Ya Dehi Tuza Sang,” and “Ran He Uthale Uthale.” He has also released several devotional albums like Gaganee Ugawala Sayantara and Mi Niranjantil Vat, which are appreciated for their spiritual depth and musical richness. 

Ravindra Sathe’s contribution to music has been widely recognized. He has received the Maharashtra State Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer multiple times, making him one of the most awarded singers in this category.  Along with this, he has been honored with several prestigious awards such as the V. Shantaram Special Contribution Award and the Balgandharva Award for his excellence in music and theatre. 

Even after decades in the industry, Ravindra Sathe continues to remain active in music, performing in concerts and contributing to the preservation of Marathi musical traditions. His career reflects a blend of classical training, theatrical excellence, and popular appeal, making him an important figure in Indian regional music.
