Biography

Ranjit Barot is an Indian drummer, composer, and music director whose work spans Hindustani-influenced rhythm, jazz fusion, and film music. Born into a musical family as the son of Kathak exponent Sitara Devi, he developed a versatile style shaped by both Indian classical traditions and global percussion influences, establishing himself as a prominent figure in contemporary Indian music. 

He has collaborated extensively with leading musicians across genres, including a long-standing association with A.R. Rahman as musical director for live concerts. Internationally, he is known for his work with guitarist John McLaughlin and the band The 4th Dimension, alongside performances with artists such as Zakir Hussain, U. Srinivas, and L. Subramaniam. His career reflects a blend of classical sensibilities with modern improvisational forms.

In addition to live performance, Barot has composed music and background scores for numerous films, including Aks, Main Hoon Na, and Shaitan, earning recognition through major awards such as the Filmfare Award for Best Background Score. His solo and collaborative projects, including Bada Boom, highlight his engagement with global music forms while maintaining a strong rhythmic foundation rooted in Indian traditions.
