About
Biography
Dr. Ram Deshpande is a distinguished Hindustani classical vocalist, celebrated for his mastery over the Gwalior, Jaipur, and Agra gharana traditions. Initiated into music by Pt. Prabhakar Deshkar and later trained under stalwarts such as Pt. Yashwantbua Joshi, Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar, and Pt. Babanrao Haldankar, he has developed a rich and sonorous vocal style marked by precision, depth, and command over intricate taans and gamak.
An academically accomplished musician, he holds a doctorate in music with research focused on Mishra ragas and is a gold medalist in M.A. Music from Nagpur University. His scholarly approach complements his performance practice, enabling him to present rare and complex ragas such as Mala Malhar, Lalita Gauri, Samant Sarang, and Rageshree Bahar with clarity and authenticity.
Dr. Deshpande has performed at some of the most prestigious music festivals and venues, including the Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav, Tansen Samaroh, and the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA). A “Top Grade” artist of All India Radio, he has received several accolades including the SRA Best Vocalist Award (1991), Kesarbai Kerkar Scholarship, and the Aditya Vikram Birla Kalakiran Puraskar, establishing him as a leading figure in contemporary Hindustani classical music.
