Rajashri Ramakrishna is a Carnatic veena artist, academic, and Associate Professor at the University of Madras, specializing in the Karaikkudi tradition.

Biography

Dr. Rajshri Ramakrishna is a Carnatic classical musician, veena artist, and scholar with an active career in performance, pedagogy, and research. She is a senior disciple of the late Rajeshwari Padmanabhan and follows the renowned Karaikkudi Vina Tradition.

Her musical specialization includes Veena performance, vocal music, and Carnatic music theory, with particular recognition for her proficiency in thanam playing. She has performed at several prominent platforms, including the Music Academy Madras and the International Veena Festival, among other major concert venues.

Academically, Dr. Ramakrishna holds advanced qualifications in music, including a BA, MA, M.Phil, and Ph.D. degrees. She currently serves as Associate Professor and Head (in charge) of the Department of Indian Music at the University of Madras, contributing actively to higher education in Indian classical music.

Her research work includes more than 40 published papers in national and international journals. Her scholarly interests focus on historical musical forms and traditions, including studies related to the musical contributions of the Maratha Kings of Thanjavur. In addition to publications, she regularly conducts lecture-demonstrations (LecDems) on Carnatic music, addressing both performance practice and historical musicology through the medium of the veena.
