Rajashree Pathak

Rajashree Pathak is a distinguished voice in Hindustani classical and devotional music, known for her lyrical expression and refined musical sensibility. Her foundation was shaped under the guidance of eminent thumri singer Shobha Gurtu and Sarla Bhide, and she continues her advanced training with sitarist and composer Pandit Shankar Abhyankar. She holds a master’s degree in music from the University of Mumbai, reflecting her strong academic and artistic grounding.

Her repertoire is wide and rooted in tradition, covering khayal, thumri, dadra, ghazals, natya sangeet, and regional forms such as Kumaoni hori. Rajashree is equally at ease in classical concerts, semi-classical presentations, and devotional performances, allowing her music to reach diverse audiences. She has appeared at prestigious festivals in India and abroad and has contributed her voice to films and docu-films, including the feature film Rang Rasiya.

A distinctive aspect of her work is her thematic programming. Rajashree presents thoughtfully designed concerts such as Ashtanayika, Baramasa, and Kumaon Hori ke Rang, where music becomes a narrative medium, blending poetry, season, emotion, and cultural context into a cohesive experience. These programs reflect her deep engagement with literature and tradition while making classical music accessible and meaningful.

Her achievements include receiving the National Talent Search Scholarship in 1977, awards from All India Radio for thumri and ghazal in 1981, and a gold medal in the Bombay University light music competition in 1983. Alongside performance, she has guided and trained many advanced students, continuing the guru–shishya tradition.
