R. Fahimuddin Dagar

Ustad Rahim Fahimuddin Khan Dagar was recognized as a guardian of the traditional Dagar vani style of dhrupad, a form known for its meditative exploration of raga and spiritual emphasis on sound. Trained within his family for more than three decades, he mastered both vocal music and the Rudra Veena, integrating ancient knowledge systems such as nāda yoga into his artistic practice. His repertoire included rare compositions in Dhrupad and Dhamar, some believed to date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, making him a vital link to the genre’s historical roots.

He became known for performances that combined precision with emotional gravitas, presenting long-form alaap that revealed the raga with clarity and patience. In addition to concerts across India, he brought Indian classical music to international audiences in Europe and North America. His recordings, released by labels in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, contributed significantly to the documentation of dhrupad in the modern era.

Throughout his career, he received some of the highest honours in the performing arts, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Kalidas Samman, multiple lifetime achievement awards, and ultimately the Padma Bhushan in 2008. Widely respected by scholars and musicians, Rahim Fahimuddin Dagar remains a key figure in the preservation and continuation of the Dagar family’s artistic heritage within Hindustani classical music.
