Radha Viswanathan

Radha Viswanathan was born on 11 December 1934 in Gobichettypalayam, Tamil Nadu, into a culturally active family. She was the eldest daughter of Thiagarajan (Kalki) Sadasivam and his first wife, Apithakuchambal. After her mother’s early death, her father married the celebrated Carnatic vocalist M. S. Subbulakshmi, who raised Radha and became her principal musical influence.

Growing up in a musically rich environment, Radha was introduced to performance at a very young age. She began accompanying Subbulakshmi on stage at around five years old, gradually absorbing the nuances of the Carnatic concert tradition. This early exposure gave her practical training in repertoire, stage discipline, and the aesthetics of classical performance.

Alongside music, Radha trained seriously in Bharatanatyam and completed her arangetram in 1945. However, by her early twenties, she chose to step away from dance to focus entirely on vocal music. She underwent training in Carnatic compositions (kritis) and also received grounding in Hindustani classical music, broadening her musical perspective.

Radha also had a brief exposure to cinema, appearing as Bharata in the film Shakunthala at the age of six. Nevertheless, her life’s main work remained within the classical music sphere.

For many years, she performed as a vocal support and co-singer in Subbulakshmi’s concerts. These performances, including prestigious national and international appearances, helped bring Carnatic music to global audiences. While she rarely projected herself as a solo star, her contribution as a musical partner and disciple was significant in maintaining the authenticity and continuity of Subbulakshmi’s concert tradition.

In her personal life, Radha married Guruswamy Viswanathan and had three children. Her life included periods of personal difficulty, including a serious illness in 1982 when she suffered from tuberculous meningitis and remained in a coma for several months, from which she eventually recovered.

Radha Viswanathan passed away on 2 January 2018 in Bengaluru at the age of 83 due to respiratory complications.

Though less publicly celebrated than her legendary mother, Radha Viswanathan is remembered by the Carnatic community as a dedicated musician who served the art form with humility and commitment. Her life reflects the tradition of guru-shishya parampara within a family lineage and highlights the often-unseen role of supporting artists in sustaining classical music traditions.
