Purushottam Laxman Deshpande

Purushottam Laxman Deshpande (8 November 1919 – 12 June 2000), widely known as Pu. La. Deshpande was a multi-faceted cultural figure whose work spanned literature, music, theatre, cinema, and broadcasting. Though best known as a Marathi humorist and writer, he was also a trained musician, composer, actor, director, and public speaker. His versatility made him one of the most influential cultural personalities in modern Maharashtra.

Born in Mumbai into a culturally inclined family, Deshpande was exposed early to literature and music. His maternal grandfather, Vaman Mangesh Dubhashi, was a noted Marathi poet and translator. Deshpande received his education in Mumbai and Pune, completing degrees in arts and law, and later a master’s degree. Alongside academics, he studied harmonium and developed a strong grounding in Hindustani classical music.

In literature, he became especially known for humor and character writing. Works such as Vyakti Ani Valli, Batatyachi Chaal, Asa Mi Asami, and Apoorvai remain widely read in Marathi. His writing often portrayed everyday middle-class life with observation, satire, and empathy. Several of his works were translated into other languages.

Deshpande also contributed significantly to theater and film. He wrote scripts, acted, directed, composed music, and sang for Marathi cinema in the 1940s–60s. He helped establish important cultural institutions, including the Bal Gandharva Ranga Mandir in Pune. In music, he composed for films and for the Marathi bhavgeet genre, working with leading singers of his time.

His broadcasting career included work with Doordarshan, where he conducted interviews and programming. He received training and exposure through the BBC and spent time in Europe, which informed his later travel writing.

Deshpande and his wife, Sunita Deshpande, were also active as educators and philanthropists. He supported several social and scientific initiatives, and royalties from his works have been used for educational and science-awareness causes.
