Pt. Birju Maharaj

Birju Maharaj was one of the greatest exponents of the Kathak dance form in India and a legendary figure in Indian classical arts. Born as Brijmohan Nath Mishra on 4 February 1938 in Handia, Uttar Pradesh, he belonged to the famous Kalka-Bindadin gharana of the Lucknow tradition of Kathak. This gharana is known for its grace, expressive storytelling (abhinaya), and intricate footwork. Maharaj was born into a family of renowned dancers; his father, Jagannath Maharaj (popularly known as Acchan Maharaj), and his uncles Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj were all leading Kathak gurus. 

From a very young age, Birju Maharaj showed extraordinary talent. He began learning dance at the age of four under the guidance of his father and later continued his training with his uncles after his father’s death when he was only nine. By the age of seven, he had already given his first stage performance, marking the beginning of an illustrious career. 

Birju Maharaj was not only a dancer but also a skilled singer, composer, and percussionist. He had deep knowledge of Hindustani classical music and could sing thumri, bhajan, and ghazal while performing. His ability to combine music, rhythm, and expressive dance made his performances unique and highly engaging. He was especially known for his mastery of abhinaya, through which he could portray emotions and characters with remarkable depth. 

He started teaching at a very young age and later became associated with prestigious institutions such as Bharatiya Kala Kendra and Kathak Kendra in New Delhi, where he served as head of faculty and director. After retiring in 1998, he founded his own dance institute, Kalashram, in Delhi to promote Kathak and train future generations. 

Birju Maharaj also made significant contributions to Indian cinema. He choreographed classical dance sequences in films such as Devdas, Bajirao Mastani, and Vishwaroopam. His choreography earned him major awards, including the National Film Award and Filmfare Award.

Throughout his career, he received numerous prestigious honours. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award at a young age and later received the Padma Vibhushan in 1986, India’s second-highest civilian award. 

Birju Maharaj passed away on 17 January 2022 in Delhi at the age of 83 due to a heart attack. His legacy continues through his students and contributions to Kathak, which he helped popularize globally. 

He is remembered not only as a master dancer but also as a storyteller who transformed Kathak into a rich, expressive, and widely appreciated art form.
