Biography

Pandit Premkumar Mallick is one of the foremost exponents of Dhrupad, the oldest surviving genre of Hindustani classical vocal music. A scion of the illustrious Darbhanga Gharana, he represents the 12th generation of a musical lineage that dates back to the 18th century, steeped in centuries of aesthetic refinement and spiritual depth. From his early training under his father, the legendary Pt. Vidur Mallick, and guidance from his grandfather, Pt. Sukhdev Mallick and Premkumar imbibe the profound principles of melody, rhythm, and poetic expression that define the Darbhanga style.

The meditative breadth of his alap distinguishes his artistry, as does the nuanced articulation of raga phrases and the intricate interplay of rhythm and poetry known as layakari. Beyond Dhrupad, he has mastered a broad spectrum of Hindustani vocal forms, including Khyal, Thumri‑Dadra, and Tappa, bringing a rich versatility to his performances.

A Top‑graded artist by All India Radio and Television, Pandit Mallick’s deep, resonant voice and commanding presence have enthralled audiences in India and around the world. Over the years, Premkumar Mallick has appeared at major festivals and cultural platforms, embodying both the tradition and evolution of Dhrupad on global stages.

His performances at the Darbar Festival, alongside family members and fellow stalwarts, have been noted for their spiritual intensity and rhythmic sophistication, further cementing his reputation as a leading representative of Darbhanga Dhrupad. More recently, his performance at the Purvi Festival 2023 in Motihari, Bihar, presented by KalaSudha, captured the serene depth and poetic elegance of his musical vision, inviting listeners to experience the timeless beauty of vocal tradition in a live setting.

A Gold Medalist of All India Radio and holder of a PhD in Classical Vocal Music, Pandit Mallick has also contributed to academic research and preservation of Dhrupad repertoire. His recordings, workshops, and collaborations extend Dhrupad’s reach to new generations, bridging historical lineage with contemporary audiences. Whether in immersive solo renditions or collaborative performances, his music continues to reflect the profound lineage and spiritual resonance of one of India’s most ancient classical traditions.
