Praveena Premananthan

Praveena Premananthan’s musical path began early. Born and raised in Switzerland, she entered the world of Carnatic music at the age of five through vocal training and began learning the violin at seven under Sri Myilvaganam Devarajah. These formative years built a strong foundation in raga, tala, and melodic structure, shaping her sensitivity to both voice and instrument.

Her advanced training continues under Sri C. N. Srinivasamurthy in India, a direct disciple of the celebrated violinist Lalgudi G. Jayaraman. Through this lineage, Praveena’s playing reflects clarity of tone, lyrical phrasing, and a deep understanding of the Carnatic aesthetic. In January 2019, she graduated from the International Institute of Tamil Arts, receiving the “Isai Kalai Mani” diploma, marking a formal milestone in her classical education.

Praveena is widely known in Europe as a dedicated accompanist for Bharatanatyam. She regularly collaborates with leading dance schools, including Sharmila Rao’s school, providing live music for arangetrams and annual festivals such as Natya Sankalpa. Her role as an accompanist places her at the center of the dance-music relationship, where timing, sensitivity, and dialogue are essential.

Beyond the classical stage, she has performed with the youth orchestra of the Kanton-School Limmattal and is an active member of the CarnaticCafe collective in Switzerland. She has also participated in violin quartets, presenting compositions of Lalgudi Jayaraman, expanding the ensemble possibilities of Carnatic violin.

Alongside her artistic life, Praveena holds a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Zurich. This balance between academic rigor and musical practice defines her approach, marked by precision, discipline, and consistency.
