About

Prattyush Banerjee, a Kolkata-born sarod player, trained under Pandit Samarendra Sikdar and Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta. He merges Hindustani classical music with vocal, tabla, and Western influences

Biography

Pandit Prattyush Banerjee is a leading figure in contemporary sarod performance, admired for combining deep training in Hindustani classical music with inventive thinking about technique and musical expression. His early exposure to renowned musicians visiting his father, a respected music collector in Kolkata, shaped his musical development from childhood. After early lessons with Pandit Samarendra Sikdar, his principal training took place under Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta, a doyen of the Senia Shahjahanpur gharana known for its lyrical style and refined architecture of raga.

Banerjee’s artistry reflects a wide creative landscape: he studies vocal music and rhythmic structures extensively, incorporates influences from Western classical piano, and experiments with instrumental form. His exploration led to a significant achievement—adapting the highly nuanced tappa vocal tradition to the sarod, preserving its characteristic melodic twists and emotional finesse. He has also designed a modern electrified sarod named Jyotidhwani, demonstrating his technical curiosity and commitment to evolving the instrument.

Beyond his solo career, Banerjee has written scholarly articles for the ITC Sangeet Research Academy and collaborated with respected accompanists. His performance at the Darbar Festival 2012, accompanied by tabla maestro Sanju Sahai, was praised for its intensity, rhythmic interplay, and contemporary interpretation of classical tradition.
