Pratap Narayan

Pandit Pratap Narayan (1918–2002) was an accomplished figure in Hindustani classical music and a representative of the Mewati gharana tradition. He received his initial musical training from his father, Motiram, which laid a strong foundation in both vocal music and tabla. His dual command over singing and percussion reflected the traditional, holistic approach to music training within his gharana.

His elder brother, Pandit Maniram Ji, was also a classical vocalist, and his younger brother, Pandit Jasraj, went on to become one of the most celebrated vocalists in Hindustani classical music. Pandit Pratap Narayan is noted for having guided and influenced Jasraj in his early musical development.

His legacy continued through his children as well. His sons, Jatin Pandit and Lalit Pandit, became widely known as the Bollywood composer duo Jatin–Lalit, while his daughter, Sulakshana Pandit, built a successful career as a playback singer and actress.

Pandit Pratap Narayan Pandit’s life reflects the continuity of the Mewati gharana across generations—through performance, teaching, and family tradition—making him an important link in one of Hindustani classical music’s respected lineages.
