About
Biography
Pandit Pran Nath occupies a unique and influential position in the history of Hindustani classical music as one of the foremost exponents of the Kirana gharana tradition in the twentieth century. Born in 1918 in Lahore, he was raised in a culturally rich environment, though his decision to pursue music went against his family’s wishes. At a young age, he left home and dedicated himself entirely to learning under the reclusive and highly respected vocalist Abdul Wahid Khan, with whom he spent nearly two decades absorbing an exacting and introspective musical discipline.
His training emphasized precise intonation, slow-tempo development, and the gradual unfolding of raga through extended alap. This austere and deeply contemplative approach, though never aimed at popularity, became the defining feature of Pran Nath’s music. Alongside his musical journey, he followed a strong spiritual path, living for several years in seclusion and engaging deeply with mysticism, which further shaped the meditative quality of his singing.
Pran Nath worked as a staff artist with All India Radio and later served as a music teacher, including a decade-long association with the University of Delhi. In the early 1970s, his career entered a significant new phase when he began performing and teaching in the United States. He founded the Kirana Center for Indian Classical Music in New York in 1972 and went on to teach at universities and institutions across the US and Europe, including Mills College.
His presence in the West had a profound impact, particularly on American minimalist and jazz musicians, who were drawn to his disciplined approach to raga, sustained tone, and spiritual depth. While Pran Nath placed little emphasis on recordings during his lifetime, his legacy survives through select albums, archival recordings, and a wide network of students across continents. Remembered as a rigorous guru, a deeply spiritual artist, and a guardian of tradition, Pandit Pran Nath remains a towering figure in Hindustani vocal music.
