About
Biography
Pandit Rameshwar Prasad Mishra belongs to the Benaras gharana and represents a generation of musicians shaped entirely by oral tradition and discipline. His training began under his guru, Bade Ramdas Mishra, at a time when there were no recordings, no notations, and no shortcuts. Every raga had to be memorized, absorbed, and lived. Practice was sacred. Morning and evening riyaz were non-negotiable, and elders ensured that music came before comfort.
For Pandit Mishra, music is not a list that can be written down. It must enter one’s being. This belief defines his approach even today. He continues to practice with the manual tanpura, rejecting dependence on electronic aids. In his view, technology weakens the relationship between the musician and sound, removing space for imagination and inner listening.
He believes that classical music grows through the close bond between guru and disciple. Learning happens not only through notes but also through presence—through breath, movement, and shared silence. Music, for him, is a lifelong sadhana, not a time-bound contract.
Based in Lucknow, Pandit Rameshwar Prasad Mishra stands as a guardian of purity in Hindustani classical music. His life and teaching remind us that true mastery comes from patience, humility, and an unbroken dialogue between the guru, the disciple, and the art itself.
