Prabhakar Karekar

Pandit Prabhakar Karekar (1944 – 12 February 2025) was a renowned Indian Hindustani classical vocalist, widely respected for his deep knowledge, expressive singing, and dedication to the classical music tradition. He was born in 1944 in Goa, which was then under Portuguese rule. From an early age, he showed a strong inclination toward music and went on to become one of the prominent vocalists of his generation. 

Karekar received his formal training in Hindustani classical music from some of the most distinguished gurus of the time, including Suresh Haldankar, Jitendra Abhisheki, and C. R. Vyas. Under their guidance, he developed a strong foundation in classical vocal techniques, including khayal and semi-classical forms. His singing style was marked by clarity, emotional depth, and a strong command over raga presentation. 

Over the years, Prabhakar Karekar established himself as an accomplished performer and a respected teacher. He was a graded artist of All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan, which helped him reach a wide audience across India. His performances were appreciated for their meditative quality and technical excellence. He also performed at numerous concerts, conferences, and workshops both in India and internationally, contributing significantly to the spread of Hindustani classical music. 

Apart from his solo performances, Karekar also explored fusion music and collaborated with international and Indian artists such as Ornette Coleman and Sultan Khan. These collaborations reflected his openness to musical experimentation while remaining rooted in classical traditions. 

He was also deeply committed to nurturing young talent. He founded the Swarprabha Trust, an organization dedicated to promoting classical music and supporting upcoming artists. Through this initiative, he trained many students and helped preserve the guru-shishya tradition. His efforts ensured that the knowledge and values of classical music were passed on to future generations. 

For his immense contribution to Indian classical music, Karekar received several prestigious awards. These include the Tansen Samman (2014), the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2016), and the Gomant Vibhushan Award. These honors recognized his excellence as both a performer and a teacher. 

Pandit Prabhakar Karekar passed away on 12 February 2025 in Mumbai at the age of 80. His death marked the loss of a great musician, but his legacy continues through his recordings, students, and contributions to Hindustani classical music. He is remembered as a dedicated artist who enriched the musical heritage of India.
