Biography

C. R. Vyas (full name: Chintaman Raghunath Vyas) was one of the most respected vocalists of Hindustani classical music in the 20th century. He was born on 9 November 1924 in Osmanabad, Maharashtra, and passed away on 10 January 2002 in Kolkata, West Bengal, at the age of 77.

C. R. Vyas was especially known for his mastery of the khayal style of singing, which is one of the most important forms of North Indian classical music. He was born into a family deeply connected with music and spirituality—his father and grandfather were Sanskrit scholars and kirtankars. From a young age, he was influenced by devotional traditions and epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, which shaped his musical sensibility.

His musical training was extensive and diverse. He initially trained under Govindrao Bhatambrekar of the Kirana gharana, and later learned from Rajarambua Paradkar of the Gwalior gharana. He was also greatly influenced by Jagannathbuwa Purohit of the Agra gharana. Due to this multi-gharana training, his singing style became a rich blend of different traditions, although the Gwalior style remained dominant in his performances.

Interestingly, music was not his primary profession in the early years. He worked at ITC in a corporate job and only later, after taking early retirement, devoted himself fully to music. Despite this, he became a leading artist on All India Radio (AIR) and television, and performed widely across India and abroad.

C. R. Vyas was not only a performer but also a composer and scholar. He created more than 200 bandishes (classical compositions) under the pen name Gunijaan. He also contributed to music literature through his book “Raag Sarita,” which documents his research and compositions in classical ragas. In 1977, he started the Gunidas Sangeet Sammelan as a tribute to his guru.

He trained many notable disciples, including Sanjeev Chimmalgi and his own son Suhas Vyas. His influence extended across generations of classical musicians.

For his immense contribution to Indian classical music, he received several prestigious awards, including the Padma Bhushan (1992), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1987), and Tansen Samman (1999)

Overall, C. R. Vyas is remembered as a highly intellectual and versatile musician whose work enriched Hindustani classical music through performance, teaching, and composition.
