Biography

Nusrat Apoorv, also known as Nusrat Apoorv Petkar, is an Indian multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, and music producer associated with Hindustani classical music, ghazal, and Sufi musical traditions. Widely recognized for his command over the harmonium, he is often regarded among his peers for his distinctive musical sensitivity and versatility as both a performer and accompanist.

He received his training under the guidance of Pandit Mukund Petkar, through whom he developed a grounding in the aesthetics of Hindustani classical music and related vocal traditions. Alongside vocal performance, Nusrat Apoorv has cultivated proficiency on instruments such as the harmonium and tabla, allowing him to work fluidly across solo presentations, accompaniment settings, and collaborative projects.

His musical work frequently engages with genres such as ghazal, Sufi music, and classical-based compositions, where the emphasis is placed on lyrical interpretation and emotive expression. One of his notable initiatives includes Ghazal Sarai, a curated baithak-style presentation designed to explore the poetic and musical depth of the ghazal tradition, drawing inspiration from iconic artists such as Mehdi Hassan and Ghulam Ali. He has also been associated with The Art of Qawwali, a performance format that revisits the traditional devotional roots of Sufi music.

Nusrat Apoorv has participated in several collaborative and interdisciplinary projects. He was featured in the Fieldlines project presented at the Magnetic Fields Festival, an intergenerational collaboration bringing together artists from diverse musical backgrounds. As a harmonium accompanist, he has also been involved in the stage production O Gaanewali, a performance exploring the musical legacy of historic female performers and the tawaif tradition.

In addition to these projects, he collaborates with contemporary musicians and independent artists, including performances with Avanti Patel and contributions to independent recordings such as the album Leela. His musical activities also include hosting and performing in intimate baithak-style gatherings and curated music evenings across major cultural centers, including Delhi, Gurugram, and Mumbai.

Through his work as a performer, accompanist, and curator of musical experiences, Nusrat Apoorv continues to engage with both the classical foundations and contemporary presentations of Hindustani music traditions.
