Biography
Nithyasree Mahadevan, born on 25 August 1973, is an acclaimed Indian Carnatic musician and playback singer whose career spans classical performance, cinema, television, and music education. She was born into an illustrious musical family, with her grandmother D. K. Pattammal and grand-uncle D. K. Jayaraman being celebrated Carnatic vocalists, and her maternal grandfather Palghat Mani Iyer regarded as one of the greatest mridangam maestros of all time. This exceptional lineage played a defining role in shaping her musical sensibilities from an early age.
Her initial training was under her mother, Lalitha Sivakumar, followed by advanced guidance from her grandmother, D. K. Pattammal. She frequently accompanied senior family members in concerts, gaining valuable stage experience and a deep understanding of classical aesthetics. Nithyasree gave her first public concert at the age of fourteen and soon established herself as a promising young artist. Over the years, she has performed extensively across India and abroad, presenting traditional and thematic concerts that highlight composers such as Papanasam Sivan and Gopalakrishna Bharathi. Her ability to sustain long-format performances and concept-based recitals has been a hallmark of her concert career.
In 1998, Nithyasree entered playback singing when A. R. Rahman invited her to sing Kannodu Kaanbadhellam for the film Jeans. The song became widely popular and earned her the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer. She went on to collaborate with Rahman and other leading composers on several notable film songs across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam cinema, while continuing to prioritize classical music.
Beyond performance, Nithyasree has contributed significantly to music education and popular culture through her role as a judge and mentor on television music reality shows. A top-graded artist of All India Radio, she has received numerous awards and titles recognizing both her classical excellence and her contribution to Indian music. Today, Nithyasree Mahadevan remains a respected and influential figure, balancing tradition with contemporary engagement while upholding the highest standards of Carnatic music.
