About
Biography
Nikhil Ravi Parmar is trained in the Kathak tradition and is a disciple of Shama Bhate, with earlier training under the late Guru Maya Rao. He has also worked as a principal dancer with the Natya STEM Dance Kampni. His practice is grounded in core elements of Kathak, including tatkar (footwork), taal (rhythmic structure), and abhinaya (expressive narrative).
Alongside classical performance, Parmar develops choreographic works that explore dialogue between tradition and present-day contexts. His projects include Uns—Celebrating Love, a collaboration combining Kathak and Bharatanatyam, and Smaran, a video-based work integrating dance with live canvas painting.
Through the Ravi-Yog Dance Foundation, he conducts workshops and masterclasses such as Open Kathak Sessions, designed for learners across age groups and levels of experience. His teaching approach combines technical training with somatic awareness and reflective movement practices.
Parmar articulates his artistic philosophy as “the body becoming a prayer,” viewing the artist as a quiet catalyst within the community. His work emphasizes sincerity, internal discipline, and the contemplative dimensions of movement within Indian classical dance.
