Murshidabadi Project

The Murshidabadi Project is a Sufi and folk music collective founded in 2014 by vocalist Soumyadeep Sikdar, also known by the stage name Murshidabadi. The ensemble is recognized for its interpretations of Sufi kalaams, Kabir’s poetry, and Bengali qawwali, presented through an acoustic, Hindustani-influenced sound that connects traditional repertoire with contemporary listening contexts.

Positioned at the intersection of Sufi, folk, and classical idioms, the group’s repertoire includes traditional ragas, devotional poetry, and narrative-based musical presentations. Their work often emphasizes lyrical meaning, spiritual themes, and the storytelling dimension of Sufi music.

The Murshidabadi Project has contributed to widely visible platforms and productions. The group has curated performances for Coke Studio Bangla, bringing regional and folk traditions to larger audiences, and has introduced Kabir’s poetry in the film Sherdil, directed by Srijit Mukherjee. Their discography includes releases such as the single Yogi (2021) and Chalte Chalte (2025).

On the live circuit, the ensemble regularly appears at art and cultural festivals, where they present thematic productions such as Saat Maqam Ishq Ke, a musical daastaan exploring the seven stages of Sufi love. Their performances are associated with Sufi concerts in India, Kabir poetry presentations, and contemporary folk-classical collaborations.
