Biography
Pandit Mukul Shivputra (born 25 March 1956 in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh) is an Indian Hindustani classical vocalist associated with the Gwalior gharana. Born Mukul Shivputra Komkalimath, he is the son and foremost disciple of the legendary vocalist Pandit Kumar Gandharva and Bhanumati Kouns. From an early age, he received intensive musical training from his father, absorbing the distinctive approach to raga interpretation and musical expression that characterized Kumar Gandharva’s style.
In addition to his foundational training in khayal singing, Mukul Shivputra also studied Dhrupad and Dhamar under musicologist K. G. Ginde and received exposure to Carnatic music under the renowned vocalist M. D. Ramanathan. His formal performing career began in 1975 when he made his debut at the prestigious Sawai Gandharva Music Festival, becoming one of the youngest artists of his generation to perform at the event.
Over the years, Mukul Shivputra has presented numerous concerts across India, performing genres such as khayal, bhajans, and thumri. His musical approach reflects both the traditional aesthetics of the Gwalior gharana and the innovative musical vision associated with his father’s legacy. Based in Pune, he continues to perform, conduct workshops for young musicians, and contribute to the teaching and preservation of Hindustani classical music.
