Biography
M. S. Viswanathan was born on 24 June 1928 in Elappully, Kerala, and faced severe hardships in early life following the loss of his father. His initial exposure to music came through informal means, including working in film studios and learning the harmonium by observing local teachers. These formative experiences gradually led him into the world of cinema, where he began assisting established composers before discovering his own aptitude for music direction.
His career reached a major milestone through his collaboration with violinist and composer T. K. Ramamoorthy. Together, as the Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy duo, they composed music for over 100 films between the early 1950s and mid-1960s, setting new standards for melody-driven film songs. After the duo parted ways, Viswanathan continued independently, composing for nearly five decades and remaining relevant across changing cinematic styles.
Known for his ability to blend light classical elements with accessible tunes, MSV worked closely with leading directors, lyricists, and singers of multiple generations. He also contributed as a playback singer and appeared in acting roles later in his career. Beyond film music, he composed devotional works and remained active as a mentor and public figure within the music community. M. S. Viswanathan passed away on 14 July 2015, leaving behind a vast musical legacy that continues to define the golden eras of South Indian cinema.
