Mitali Banerjee Bhawmik

Mitali Banerjee Bhawmik is a Hindustani classical vocalist recognized for her work in raag sangeet and semi-classical genres such as thumri, dadra, kajri, chaiti, and hori. Born in Assam and now based in New Jersey, she has built a career that combines performance, pedagogy, and community outreach.

Her early musical training began with Sri Ajit Dutta, followed by extensive guidance from the late Biren Phukan in Guwahati and later from Kolkata-based vocalist Meera Banerjee. A major formative influence was her long tutelage under V. G. Jog, the noted violin maestro, from 1984 onward. Under his guidance, she developed an approach that draws from multiple gharana aesthetics rather than adhering to a single lineage. She continues to expand her semi-classical repertoire under Smt. Dalia Rahut, a senior disciple of Girija Devi.

Bhawmik has performed at concerts and festivals across India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and parts of Europe and Australia. Her singing is noted for melodic clarity and careful raga development. She also contributed as a playback singer to The Namesake, the film directed by Mira Nair.

She has released four albums featuring classical and semi-classical music; her debut album Vandana, included violin accompaniment by her guru V. G. Jog. As an educator, she serves as Director of Ethnomedia Music Studio in New Jersey, where she teaches Hindustani classical music. Her students and institution have received New Jersey State Arts Council support for multiple years.

Bhawmik is also the founder of Raag-Rang, a non-profit organization that presents Indian classical concerts in the community. Her work in performance and education was recognized with the 2021 Excellence in the Arts Award from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission.
