Mita Nag

Mita Nag is a leading sitar player of the Vishnupur Gharana, a Bengal-based tradition with a history of nearly 300 years. Belonging to a distinguished musical lineage, she is the daughter of Pandit Manilal Nag and granddaughter of Sangeet Acharya Gokul Nag. As a sixth-generation musician, her style reflects the gharana’s strong Dhrupad influence, particularly evident in the alap, where instrumental expression closely follows vocal traditions.

Initiated into music at the age of four, Mita Nag trained under her mother before continuing rigorous tutelage with her father. She made her debut performance in 1979 at Mahajati Sadan, Kolkata, and in the same year received the Junior National Talent Search Scholarship from the Government of India. Over the years, she has performed extensively as both a soloist and in duet recitals with her father at major festivals and venues across India, the United States, Europe, and Japan.

In addition to her performance career, Mita Nag is involved in the promotion of Indian classical music through the Gokul Nag Memorial Foundation, established in memory of her grandfather. A postgraduate in English Literature with an M.Phil. from the University of Kolkata, she has also been awarded the Junior Fellowship by the Ministry of Human Resource Development for her research on the Vishnupur Gharana, contributing to both the performance and academic discourse of the tradition.
