Mike Brenner

Mike Brenner, also known as “Slo-Mo,” is an American musician based in Philadelphia, United States. He is a versatile guitarist and multi-instrumentalist who has contributed to a wide range of musical styles, including rock, bluegrass, country, folk, and experimental music. Over the years, he has built a strong reputation as both a performer and collaborator, recording on more than 100 albums for independent as well as major label artists. 

Brenner first gained recognition in the late 1980s, not as a performer but as a music writer. He contributed to well-known publications such as The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Weekly. However, he soon shifted his focus back to performing music and joined the band Flight of Mavis as a guitarist. Around the same time, he began developing his own musical project called The Low Road. This band became a significant part of his early career, eventually signing with Caroline Records and releasing albums like The Devil’s Pocket and Fidelity. The group toured extensively with popular artists such as Los Lobos, Ben Folds Five, and Barenaked Ladies, helping Brenner gain wider exposure. 

After The Low Road disbanded in 1997, Brenner explored new musical directions, particularly focusing on the dobro (resonator guitar). Inspired by musicians like Jerry Douglas and Mike Auldridge, he developed a strong command of bluegrass and country slide guitar styles. He later formed the duo John Train with songwriter Jon Houlon, continuing his experimentation with roots-based sounds. Around this time, he also collaborated with other artists and bands, including the Philadelphia group Marah, with whom he recorded and toured internationally, performing across the United States and Europe. 

One of Brenner’s most innovative contributions to music came through his project Slo-Mo. In this project, he blended traditional slide guitar sounds with modern electronic beats and hip-hop influences. His debut album Novelty (2000) showcased this experimental style, while later albums like My Buzz Comes Back (2005) and Smokey Mountain (2007) further developed the fusion of genres. Collaborating with rapper Mic Wrecka, Brenner helped create a unique sound that combined elements of blues, electronica, and hip-hop, gaining popularity in the Philadelphia music scene. 

In addition to his solo and band projects, Brenner has worked with several notable musicians and groups. He has toured and recorded with Magnolia Electric Company and Song:Ohia, contributing to their albums and performances. His collaborations extend across different genres, showing his adaptability and creativity as a musician. He has also performed alongside artists such as India.Arie and Arrested Development, further highlighting his diverse musical reach.
