Biography

Manjushri Mate is a Bharatanatyam dancer from Goa whose artistic journey began in childhood. Her interest in dance was nurtured within her family, particularly by her mother, who had aspired to become a classical dancer. At the age of eight, Manjushri formally entered training after being identified by her first guru, Dr. Kshitija Barve, who guided her toward Bharatanatyam. Under this early mentorship, she developed foundational technique and discipline, learning not only movement vocabulary but also the values of punctuality, structure, and sustained practice.

After four years of initial training, she continued her studies under Guru Mandira Joshi Tirodkar. This transition introduced her to a different stylistic approach within Bharatanatyam, shifting from the Kalakshetra style to the Tanjore bani. Under Mandira Joshi’s guidance, her training deepened, and she was encouraged to view classical dance as a viable professional path. Recognizing the limited scope for advanced Bharatanatyam education in Goa, her guru facilitated her move to Mumbai, where Manjushri trained under Guru Sandhya, a senior exponent and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award recipient.

In Mumbai, Manjushri completed her post-graduation in Bharatanatyam, gaining exposure to both performance practice and theoretical foundations. She describes this period as transformative, expanding her understanding of dance as a complete art form that integrates movement, rhythm, expression, and philosophy. Her training emphasized not only technical precision but also abhinaya, leading her to undertake acting studies to strengthen facial expression and narrative clarity.

Parallel to her dance education, Manjushri pursued academic studies in economics, reflecting a balanced approach toward professional and intellectual development. She completed her graduation in the arts stream while simultaneously continuing advanced dance training, demonstrating sustained commitment across disciplines.

Manjushri views dance as a form of meditation and inner growth, emphasizing its role in mental discipline and emotional clarity. She continues to perform and teach while articulating a long-term vision of establishing a dedicated classical dance academy in Goa. Her goal is to create structured pathways for students within the state, enabling them to pursue formal qualifications and professional careers in classical dance without needing to relocate.

Through sustained practice, teaching, and advocacy, Manjushri Mate represents a new generation of Bharatanatyam artists seeking to combine rigorous tradition with regional development and educational access.
