About
Biography
Mamta Maharaj is a celebrated figure in Indian classical dance and a trailblazer within the historic Kalka–Bindadin Lucknow Gharana. She is the third daughter of the iconic Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj and Annapurna Devi. While women in her family traditionally learned dance, they did not perform publicly. Mamta Maharaj broke this long-standing custom, becoming the first female professional performer from this illustrious lineage.
Trained directly under her father, she is admired for her command over abhinaya (expressive storytelling) and the graceful, rhythmic footwork that defines the Lucknow style of Kathak. Her performances reflect both technical mastery and emotional depth, rooted firmly in classical tradition.
She has performed extensively across India and in more than 30 countries, representing Indian classical dance at major international platforms, including festivals such as the Khajuraho Dance Festival. Her contribution to the arts has been recognized with honors such as the Yuva Mahotsava Award.
Beyond the stage, Mamta Maharaj is deeply committed to education and legacy. She teaches at Kalashram in New Delhi, the institution founded by her father, and regularly conducts workshops around the world. Through her teaching and mentorship, including guiding younger dancers such as her niece Ragini Maharaj, she continues to nurture and sustain the classical Kathak tradition for future generations.
