Biography
Pandit Mallikarjun Bheemaraayappa Mansur (31 December 1910 – 12 September 1992) was a legendary Hindustani classical singer whose art represented the highest ideals of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. Born in the village of Mansur near Dharwad, he grew up in a culturally rich environment where music and theater played an important role. His early exposure to Yakshagana and Carnatic music laid a strong foundation, which later evolved through rigorous training in Hindustani music under eminent gurus, most notably Bhurji Khan of the Jaipur-Atrauli lineage.
Mansur was especially admired for his command over rare and unconventional ragas, which he rendered with exceptional imagination while maintaining emotional depth and structural integrity. His performances were marked by powerful taans, subtle improvisation, and an uncompromising classical approach. Alongside his concert career, he served as a music director with His Master’s Voice and later as a music advisor to All India Radio in Dharwad.
Honored with the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, Mallikarjun Mansur’s legacy continues through recordings, memorial institutions, and the enduring influence of his music on succeeding generations.
