Malini Avasthi

Malini Awasthi was born in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, into a family that valued both education and classical music. She was introduced to music at the age of five, inspired by her mother’s deep affinity for Purab Ang Gayaki and devotional singing. Her early promise became evident when she cleared the examinations of Prayag Sangeet Samiti ahead of schedule. Alongside academic studies at Mount Carmel College, she received formal musical training under Ustad Rahat Ali Khan and later completed postgraduate degrees in Hindustani classical music from Bhatkhande University, Lucknow, and in modern history from the University of Lucknow, earning gold medals in both.

Her artistic journey reached its defining phase under the tutelage of Vidushi Girija Devi, becoming a ganda-bandh disciple of the Banaras gharana. Malini Awasthi emerged as a leading voice in folk and semi-classical genres while maintaining classical depth and linguistic versatility across Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Braj, and Bundeli. She built a long association with Akashvani, becoming a top-grade artist of All India Radio and an ICCR-empanelled cultural ambassador, representing India at major international forums.

Beyond concerts, she has made significant contributions to films, television, academic discourse, and cultural policy. She has served as a visiting professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, delivered lectures and TEDx talks, conducted workshops nationwide, and actively worked for the preservation and promotion of folk traditions through her organization Sonchiraiya. Her role in public cultural initiatives, literary work, and national honors—including the Padma Shri—firmly establishes Malini Awasthi as one of the most influential custodians of Indian folk and Purab Ang musical heritage.
