Biography
Malavika Sarukkai (born 1959, Tamil Nadu, India) is an Indian classical dancer and choreographer known for her work in Bharatanatyam. Over several decades, she has been recognized for presenting traditional Bharatanatyam repertoire with a strong emphasis on interpretative depth, textual inquiry, and thematic exploration.
She began learning Bharatanatyam at the age of seven. Her early training was under Kalyanasundaram Pillai of the Tanjavur school and Rajaratnam of the Vazhuvoor school, two established lineages within the Bharatanatyam tradition. She later studied abhinaya under Kalanidhi Narayanan. In addition to Bharatanatyam, she received training in Odissi under the gurus Kelucharan Mohapatra and Ramani Ranjan Jena.
Sarukkai made her stage debut at the age of twelve in Mumbai. Since then, she has performed widely across India and internationally. Her performances have been presented at venues including the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., among others in the United States and abroad.
Her artistic journey and choreographic work have been documented in the film Samarpanam, commissioned by the Government of India. She was also featured in the BBC/WNET television documentary series Dancing, a nine-hour exploration of world dance traditions. Another documentary, The Unseen Sequence—Exploring Bharatanatyam Through the Art of Malavika Sarukkai, has been screened at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Mumbai.
