Mahendra Kapoor

Mahendra Kapoor was one of the most celebrated playback singers in Indian cinema, especially known for his powerful voice and patriotic songs. He was born on 9 January 1934 in Amritsar, Punjab, British India. Later, his family moved to Mumbai, where he grew up and developed a deep interest in music. 

From a young age, he was inspired by legendary singer Mohammed Rafi, whom he regarded as his guru. To build a strong foundation, Mahendra Kapoor received formal training in Hindustani classical music under several renowned teachers such as Pt. Hussanlal, Pt. Jagannath Bua, and Ustad Niaz Ahmed Khan. This classical training helped him develop a strong and versatile singing style. 

His career took off after he won the Metro-Murphy All India singing competition, which opened doors to the film industry. He made his playback debut in the film Navrang (1958) with the song “Aadha Hai Chandrama Raat Aadhi,” composed by C. Ramchandra. 

Mahendra Kapoor became extremely popular in the 1960s and 1970s. He is best remembered for his patriotic songs, which earned him the title “Voice of Patriotism.” His most iconic song, “Mere Desh Ki Dharti” from the film Upkar (1967), became one of India’s most loved patriotic songs and won him the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer. 

Apart from patriotic songs, he also sang romantic, emotional, and devotional songs. Some of his famous tracks include “Chalo Ek Baar Phir Se,” “Neele Gagan Ke Tale,” and “Kisi Patthar Ki Moorat Se.” He frequently worked with filmmaker B. R. Chopra and actor Manoj Kumar, becoming their preferred playback voice in many films. 

Mahendra Kapoor had a wide vocal range and a distinctive energetic singing style. Over his long career, he sang in many Indian languages such as Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, and Bhojpuri. He was especially popular in Marathi cinema, where he lent his voice to actor Dada Kondke. 

He received several prestigious awards for his contribution to music, including the Padma Shri in 1972, multiple Filmfare Awards, and a National Film Award. His contribution to Indian music remained significant for over five decades. 

In his personal life, he was married and had children, including his son Rohan Kapoor, who also worked in films. Mahendra Kapoor passed away on 27 September 2008 in Mumbai due to cardiac failure at the age of 74.
