L. Shankar, born Shankar Lakshminarayana on 26 April 1950 in Madras (now Chennai), is a world-renowned Indian violinist, composer, and singer. Famous for pioneering East-West musical fusion, he combines Carnatic classical music with jazz, rock, and electronic styles. He co-founded the influential fusion group Shakti with guitarist John McLaughlin and collaborated with artists like Peter Gabriel, Frank Zappa, Sting, and Phil Collins. Shankar invented the unique ten-string double violin, capable of covering the range of multiple orchestral string instruments. Over his long career, he has released numerous solo albums and earned international recognition for his innovative musical style and technical brilliance.
