About
Biography
Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi is one of the leading exponents of Carnatic violin music and a torchbearer of the famous Lalgudi tradition. Born in Chennai in 1966, she was trained initially by her grandfather Lalgudi Gopala Iyer and later by her father, the legendary violin maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman. She made her stage debut at a young age and soon gained recognition for her expressive “gayaki” style that closely resembles vocal music. Apart from solo performances, she frequently performs with her brother, violinist G. J. R. Krishnan, as the celebrated Lalgudi Duo. Vijayalakshmi has toured extensively across the USA, Europe, Australia, Singapore, and the Middle East. Along with being a violin virtuoso, she is also an accomplished vocalist and composer. In 2022, she was jointly awarded the prestigious Sangita Kalanidhi title by the Madras Music Academy for her outstanding contribution to Carnatic music.
