L. Shankar, born Shankar Lakshminarayana in Chennai in 1950, is one of the most innovative and influential musicians to emerge from the Carnatic tradition. Born into a deeply musical family, he began vocal training at the age of two under the guidance of his father, V. Lakshminarayana, a respected Carnatic vocalist and violinist. Alongside vocal music, he trained intensively in violin and percussion, developing a rare all-round musical foundation that later became central to his artistic identity.
Recognized as a child prodigy, L. Shankar gave his first public concert at the age of seven and quickly gained national recognition for his exceptional command over melody, rhythm, and improvisation. In his teenage years, he became a sought-after violinist in Carnatic concerts and recordings. Despite early success in India, he pursued advanced academic study in ethnomusicology in the United States, which further broadened his understanding of global musical systems.
L. Shankar is internationally celebrated for his pioneering role in Indo-Western fusion. As a founding member of the iconic group Shakti with guitarist John McLaughlin, he helped establish a new musical language that blended Indian raga, complex tala, jazz harmony, and improvisation. These recordings and performances set new benchmarks for world music in the 1970s and continue to influence musicians worldwide.
A major innovation in his career was the invention of the double violin, a custom-designed instrument capable of covering the full orchestral string range. This instrument allowed him to expand the expressive and harmonic possibilities of violin performance and became central to his solo recordings and collaborations.
Beyond Shakti, L. Shankar has worked extensively with leading international artists, including Peter Gabriel, Frank Zappa, Phil Collins, and Eric Clapton, and has contributed to acclaimed film soundtracks such as The Last Temptation of Christ and The Passion of the Christ. He has released numerous solo albums spanning classical, fusion, and contemporary styles, several of which have received international awards and Grammy nominations.
With his rare combination of classical depth, technical innovation, and cross-cultural vision, L. Shankar continues to stand as a bridge between Indian classical music and global musical expression, inspiring generations of musicians across traditions.
