Krushna Salunke

Krushna Salunke is an Indian classical percussionist widely recognized for his mastery of the pakhawaj, a traditional barrel-shaped drum used in Hindustani classical music and dhrupad traditions. Based in India, he has developed a reputation for energetic and expressive performances that highlight the depth and complexity of pakhawaj playing. His style blends traditional rhythmic structures with dynamic presentation, making classical percussion accessible to contemporary audiences.

Salunke began his musical training under Vishnupanth Londhe, studying foundational techniques of pakhawaj for several years before continuing advanced training in the instrument. His performances are particularly noted for their powerful rhythmic patterns (fast rhythmic compositions) and expressive padhant, the vocal recitation of rhythmic syllables that forms an integral part of North Indian percussion performance practice.

In addition to solo concerts and accompaniment, Krushna Salunke leads a specialized rhythmic production titled “Pakhawaj Shivatandav,” which presents devotional themes through high-energy percussion compositions. He is also involved in music education through initiatives such as Krushnanad Pakhawaj Gurukul in Pune, where he mentors young students of the instrument. His performances have been presented at major cultural venues and festivals, including the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) and the Saptak Annual Music Festival, and he has received recognition, such as winning the Pakhawaj competition at the 142nd Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan in Jalandhar.
