Biography
Kiran Godkhindi is a distinguished Indian classical percussionist known for his unique artistic voice and deep-rooted connection to the traditions of Indian classical music. Born into a family steeped in musical heritage, Kiran's journey began at an early age. His father, Pandit Venkatesh Godkhindi, was his first mentor, nurturing his passion for rhythm and sound. This foundational training ignited Kiran's dedication to mastering the tabla, leading him to seek the guidance of several renowned tabla gurus.
His extensive training included learning from esteemed masters such as Pandit Prabhakar Chari, Pandit Nanda Kumar, Pandit Lalgiri Goswami, Ustad Abdullah of Delhi, and Pandit Raghunath Nakod. This diverse tutelage allowed him to assimilate various gharana influences while fostering his own distinct style. Over the past 30 years, Kiran Godkhindi has made significant contributions to the world of Indian classical music through his dynamic performances.
He has shared the stage with leading instrumentalists and vocalists, showcasing his versatility across classical and fusion genres. His long-standing collaboration with his younger brother, Pandit Pravin Godkhindi, has been particularly notable, where together they have blended traditional and contemporary sounds, captivating audiences both in India and internationally. As part of the band “Krishna,” Kiran has toured extensively, introducing intricate Indian classical rhythms to global audiences, further enhancing the appreciation of the genre.
Kiran's expertise is not limited to performance; he is also deeply committed to education and mentorship. He serves as a visiting faculty member at Deccan International School and is actively involved in training the next generation of musicians at Sanjog Bansuri Mahavidyalaya, an institution founded by his father. His home studio has become a creative hub where he composes and produces music for various media, including television, theatre, and wellness projects, demonstrating his adaptability and innovative spirit.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Kiran Godkhindi is dedicated to supporting the music community through his role as a trustee of the Sanjog Charitable Trust. This organisation focuses on promoting concert initiatives and nurturing young artists, reflecting Kiran's commitment to ensuring the growth and sustainability of Indian classical music.
