Biography

Kenny Wessel is an American jazz guitarist, composer, and educator, known for his versatile and expressive style. He is regarded as a unique voice in jazz guitar, performing across a wide range of styles from traditional jazz to free improvisation. His music reflects a deep interest in blending jazz with global traditions, especially Indian classical music, and he has performed in more than 25 countries at major festivals and concert venues. 

Kenny Wessel gained international recognition through his long association with legendary jazz musician Ornette Coleman. He was a member of Coleman’s groundbreaking band Prime Time for over 12 years (1988–2000), touring worldwide and contributing to the album Tone Dialing. He also performed Coleman’s orchestral work Skies of America with prestigious ensembles like the New York Philharmonic and the Philharmonia Orchestra in London. 

Throughout his career, Kenny Wessel has collaborated with many well-known artists from the jazz and global music world. These include Donald Fagen, John Abercrombie, David Liebman, and Gloria Lynne. He has also worked extensively with Indian classical musicians such as Debashish Bhattacharya, Karaikudi Mani, and V. M. Bhatt. His collaborations highlight his strong interest in world music and his ability to connect different musical traditions. 

In addition to performing, Kenny Wessel is an accomplished composer. He has released several albums, including Unstrung and Weights & Measures, which received critical acclaim and recognition in jazz publications. His compositions are known for their organic and expressive quality, often blending structured forms with improvisation. He has also received multiple grants from organizations like “Meet the Composer” for his creative work. 

Kenny Wessel is also a dedicated educator. He teaches at institutions such as Western Connecticut State University and the City College of New York, and is involved with the New York Jazz Workshop. He regularly conducts workshops, clinics, and masterclasses around the world, including at Yale University, Manhattan School of Music, and international festivals. 

As a global artist and teacher, Kenny Wessel continues to contribute significantly to jazz and world music, bridging cultures through performance, composition, and education.
