Kayhan Kalhor

Kayhan Kalhor (born 24 November 1964 in Kermanshah, Iran) is a distinguished kamancheh and setar player whose music reflects a rare synthesis of Persian classical tradition and Kurdish folk heritage. He began studying music at the age of seven and quickly emerged as a prodigious talent, performing with the National Orchestra of Radio and Television of Iran while still a teenager. His early training in the radif tradition was enriched by travels across Iran, particularly in regions where Kurdish, Turkish, and Persian musical influences intersect.

In his late teens, Kalhor left Iran to continue his studies in Europe and later in Canada, where he completed his formal education in music. These formative years shaped his global outlook and deepened his interest in musical exchange. Over time, he became known for collaborations with leading Iranian vocalists as well as prominent international artists and ensembles.

A founding artistic force within the Silk Road Ensemble, Kalhor has been instrumental in expanding the global appreciation of Persian music. His compositions and performances are noted for their introspective character, historical awareness, and cultural sensitivity. Today, his work continues to resonate across continents, positioning him as a vital voice in world and classical music.
