Kamala Chakravarty

Kamala Chakravarty was an Indian sitar player and teacher of Hindustani classical music. She became known internationally as one of the close disciples and collaborators of the legendary sitar maestro Ravi Shankar. Through her performances and work with him, she played an important role in introducing Indian classical music to audiences outside India.

Kamala Chakravarty received her musical training under the guidance of Ravi Shankar. She learned the traditional techniques and musical style associated with the Maihar Gharana, the musical lineage connected with Ravi Shankar and the great guru Allauddin Khan. Her training helped her develop strong technical skills and a deep understanding of ragas and classical compositions.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Kamala Chakravarty frequently performed and toured internationally with Ravi Shankar. She participated in concerts and music tours across Europe and the United States, where Indian classical music was gaining popularity. Through these tours, she helped introduce the sitar and Hindustani classical traditions to many new listeners around the world.

In addition to performing, Kamala Chakravarty also worked as a teacher and promoter of Indian classical music. She taught students in different countries and helped spread knowledge of the sitar and Indian musical traditions. Her efforts contributed to the growing global appreciation of Hindustani classical music.

Although she was not as widely known as some leading performers, Kamala Chakravarty is remembered for her important role in supporting and promoting the music of Ravi Shankar and for helping bring Indian classical music to international audiences.
